Cortisol helps the amygdala and hippocampus preserve emotional danger, even as stress can blur the surrounding scene.
Cortisol does not simply record every stressful detail. During emotional arousal, it helps prioritize salient information through glucocorticoid receptors and coordinated hippocampal-amygdala activity. The hippocampus supplies contextual and episodic structure; the amygdala amplifies emotional significance. This can strengthen later recall of traumatic material, while high or prolonged stress may impair hippocampal function and memory for surrounding neutral details.
Trauma can turn one charged moment into a standing alarm by repeatedly reopening the brain’s threat-priority circuit.
The deeper pattern is a priority system: cortisol, together with noradrenaline, gives emotionally charged information privileged access to hippocampus-amygdala circuits. A traumatic memory may therefore remain powerful not because every detail is preserved, but because threat significance is repeatedly reactivated and reconsolidated. This reading rests on converging models and studies, while the exact transition from strong memory to PTSD remains unresolved.
