How do memory and suggestion shape eyewitness reports?

Cognitive and legal-psychology research treats eyewitness testimony as neither uniformly reliable nor uniformly worthless. Memory is affected by attention and stress at encoding, then by retrieval, misinformation, questioning, and source confusion. The strongest practical implication is procedural: obtain an early, uncontaminated account, avoid suggestive questioning, and interpret later confidence cautiously.
A more skeptical reading emphasizes how investigative practice itself can manufacture coherence. Repeated interviews, detailed prompts, requests to reconstruct specifics, and confidence-building procedures may transform uncertain fragments into a persuasive story. Yet this lens also resists the blanket conclusion that all eyewitness evidence is unusable: early uncontaminated identification and appropriately elicited recall can retain evidential value.
