What are false memory therapies?
Image: theconversation.com
The mainstream evidence-based view treats recovered-memory therapy as scientifically unsupported and potentially harmful when therapists presume hidden trauma and use suggestive methods to retrieve it. Reviews link some therapeutic procedures to false memories and find no reliable way to distinguish recovered true memories from false ones. Professional guidance therefore emphasizes avoiding leading questions and treating memory reports cautiously.
A dissenting scientific position does not necessarily defend recovered-memory therapy. It argues instead that claims about therapy-induced false memories should be stated precisely: trauma can affect memory in multiple ways, some people may later recall genuinely experienced events, and laboratory studies do not automatically establish frequent, elaborate false memories in clinical settings. Evidence supports caution without treating every recovered memory as false.
