The galaxy distribution is a true cosmic fractal extending beyond current survey limits.
The mainstream cosmological account treats the galaxy distribution as fractal-like on small and intermediate scales but increasingly homogeneous and isotropic at sufficiently large scales. Survey analyses report consistency with standard cold-dark-matter predictions and estimate a transition toward homogeneity around roughly 100 h⁻¹ Mpc, although measuring that transition is challenging because survey limits can approach the relevant scale.
If galaxies clump the same way at every scale, the smooth universe in the textbooks is an assumption built into the math.
Zoom out on a map of galaxies and the clumps keep clumping. Pietronero's school of fractal cosmologists measured a pattern with a dimension near 2 and argued the standard tests assume the smoothness they claim to find. Mainstream surveys see things even out around 100 h⁻¹ Mpc. Whoever is right decides whether the cosmos has a final scale, or none at all.
