Does the multiverse idea mean our universe's laws are accidental epicycles of a larger cosmic lottery?
Multiverse ideas are treated by some physicists as legitimate consequences or interpretations of existing theories, rather than as established discoveries. Eternal inflation, quantum many-worlds, and related proposals could explain features of our universe, but their observational support remains indirect and disputed.
A universe you can never touch, see or test is hard to tell apart from an invisible dragon in the garage.
Eternal inflation and many-worlds, two of physics' boldest ideas, both seem to sprout other universes. Skeptics ask the rude question: how would you ever check? A realm that can't interact with ours is like the invisible dragon, a creature built so it can never be detected. The multiverse may well be real. The fight is over whether believing in it is still science.
