The Story
Pickaxe Mountain is being studied for conventional attack, but no public record confirms a nuclear order or a 400-bomb seismic barrage.
The public record shows a difficult conventional targeting problem, not a confirmed nuclear decision. U.S. officials have reportedly developed plans involving the MOAB, while analysts and imagery focus on the site’s construction, depth, and possible contents. The specific Reddit account of a 400-bomb array is not corroborated in the supplied reporting.
- What is documentedOfficials have discussed conventional strike options, and the site remains a prominent concern because its depth may defeat existing weapons.
- What remains openThe facility’s contents, the effectiveness of any proposed barrage, and whether nuclear weapons entered serious operational planning remain unresolved.
- CNN reported that U.S. military strike plans included potentially using the MOAB against Iranian energy infrastructure and nuclear sites if combat resumed.
- Public reporting describes Pickaxe Mountain as deeply buried beneath a mountain, with uncertain contents and no IAEA access.
- The nuclear allegation lacks official confirmation, and the report carrying it characterizes its credibility as low while describing conventional weapons as the operational focus.

Deeper Insight
Pickaxe Mountain, Iran's buried nuclear site, makes “conventional” dangerous. Four hundred bombs could make restraint look like firepower.
Pickaxe Mountain, an underground Iranian nuclear-processing site, may sit 300 to 450 feet beneath granite, and earlier strikes on Iran’s Fordow facility caused limited damage. That gap between hitting a target and destroying it is where escalation grows. A 400-bomb array is unconfirmed, but the idea shows how avoiding fallout can become permission to bring an earthquake.
- What it could changeA successful bomb array could reshape how militaries attack deep sites without using nuclear weapons.
- How it touches todayUncertainty about Pickaxe Mountain’s depth and contents already makes every strike plan a gamble.
- Our futureThe line between conventional war and catastrophic escalation could grow harder to see.
- The originating post alleges White House discussions of tactical nuclear bunker-busters and a simultaneous array of conventional bombs intended to collapse the underground complex.
- A specialist report says Pickaxe Mountain may lie 300 to 450 feet beneath granite and that even the largest conventional bomb may not reach the tunnels.
- NPR reported that a classified assessment found earlier MOP strikes on Iran’s Fordow facility caused limited damage rather than eliminating the site, underscoring the uncertainty surrounding deep-penetration attacks.
