A nuclear standoff burst could move some large asteroids, but timing and composition decide whether the intervention works.
The standard technical reading is straightforward: a standoff nuclear burst is a credible last-resort tool, not a guaranteed planetary shield. X-rays can eject surface material and alter an asteroid’s trajectory, while simulations indicate that carefully chosen disruption could reduce the danger from some large or short-warning threats. The result remains highly dependent on asteroid properties and mission design.
The nuclear option turns asteroid defense into a race between early knowledge, physical uncertainty, and global trust.
The deeper reading is that nuclear deflection is less a simple weapon than a race between knowledge and time. Early detection may permit a controlled nudge; late detection may force a gamble on fragmentation, where uncertainty about rubble, voids, and fragment trajectories becomes decisive. The same option also strains nuclear-restraint norms and requires unprecedented international cooperation.
