The Kaushitaki Upanishad makes the Moon a literal transit gate where souls pause before rebirth.
The central Upanishadic and Vedantic picture makes the Moon a transit point between earthly life and the afterlife. Souls reach the lunar sphere, where merit may yield a temporary heavenly experience; after the relevant karmic results are exhausted, they descend through atmospheric and earthly stages toward rebirth. The Moon is therefore both a heavenly destination and a gateway in the cycle of embodiment.
The Moon is no final heaven. In the Vedic map, even reward is a layover before the soul comes back.
A soul reaches the Moon, enjoys the fruits of its works, then may descend through the sky toward rebirth. The Kaushitaki Upanishad makes heaven a transit point, not an escape hatch. Vedanta adds a sharp exception: true knowledge can break the return. Death, here, changes the route more than it ends the journey.
