DMT can make an unfamiliar world feel remembered, but the studies show the feeling, not a prior visit.
DMT radically changes perception, self-awareness, memory, and the sense of place. Familiarity can then appear as a powerful recognition signal attached to a novel scene, not necessarily as recall of an actual prior visit. The available studies document the pattern, but do not yet identify the brain mechanism that produces it.
DMT users enter a place they've never seen and feel they've come home. In 227 accounts, the recognition wasn't from a past trip.
The scene is alien, crowded with entities, and yet it feels like returning. In a study of 227 such experiences, users didn't trace the feeling to earlier psychedelic sessions; it attached to the places, the beings, the knowledge itself. The philosopher Bergson argued memory and perception can run at once in the present. If he's right, the homecoming isn't a mistake. It's recognition.
