Weighing mainstream and alternative accounts…

The one-mind hypothesis: a single universal consciousness manifests as apparently separate individual minds.
The mainstream scientific picture treats individual consciousness as closely dependent on particular brains and their information-processing activity. From this standpoint, the one-mind hypothesis faces a hard explanatory problem: it must account for distinct personal perspectives, neurological disruption, and cases in which mental functions divide or change with brain organization.
The alternative view treats individual selves as surface-level partitions within a wider field of consciousness. Its strongest resources are Schrödinger’s claim that consciousness is experienced only in the singular, non-dual philosophies that reject mind plurality, and traditions describing consciousness as an overarching dimension linking individual experience.
