The Zoo Hypothesis — are advanced extraterrestrials hiding humanity to watch our development?
The hypothesis is treated as a coherent but highly speculative solution to the Fermi paradox. Its logic is straightforward: advanced civilizations might hide Earth to protect natural development, avoid contamination, or limit risks. However, current observations do not establish either extraterrestrial civilizations or their motives, so the idea remains one possibility among several.
For the zoo hypothesis to work, every civilization in the galaxy must keep the same secret, across gaps light takes ages to cross.
The zoo hypothesis, the idea that aliens deliberately leave us alone, explains the silence neatly. The catch is coordination. Civilizations rise at different times in different places, and a rule can't travel faster than light. A galaxy-wide hands-off policy would need every power to agree and stay quiet for ages. If the zoo is real, its keepers solved a problem no empire ever has.
