Weighing mainstream and alternative accounts…

Deliberate Earth broadcasts aimed at contacting extraterrestrials could permanently reveal our presence.
METI is a technically deliberate extension of the search for extraterrestrial intelligence: rather than merely listening, it constructs and broadcasts signals intended to initiate contact. The strongest mainstream concern is not that transmission is impossible, but that humanity lacks reliable knowledge of extraterrestrial intentions, capabilities, or the consequences of announcing our presence. That uncertainty supports international debate and governance before powerful transmissions continue.

METI turns a powerful transmitter into a megaphone for Earth. The few who aim it may speak for everyone.
SETI listens to the dark. METI points powerful transmitters at other stars and sends structured messages, from mathematics to music. That flips the problem: a small group can announce humanity before humanity has agreed what to say, or what an answer might bring. Cosmic silence was passive. Broadcasting makes it a choice with consequences for everyone.
