The Acts of Pilate preserves Christian conviction about Jesus, not a contemporaneous report that settles what happened after the crucifixion.
The Acts of Pilate reads as a later Christian narrative built from Gospel material, not as a surviving official report from Pontius Pilate. Its scenes of guards, rabbis, Joseph of Arimathea, resurrection, and ascension reveal how Christian communities developed and presented devotion; they do not independently establish that those post-crucifixion events occurred.
A later Christian text hands guards and rabbis a script. It shows belief learning to sound like courtroom testimony.
Chapters 12 to 16 of the Acts of Pilate put guards, rabbis, and Joseph of Arimathea on the stand for Jesus’ resurrection and ascension. But the surviving text probably took shape in the late fourth century, draws on the Gospels, and shifts across versions. It tells us how Christians built public proof from sacred belief.
