Apocryphal gospels are not merely sidelines but shaped rival Christianities that competed with the canonical Gospels.
In standard academic usage, apocryphal gospels are diverse ancient, noncanonical texts that expand, reinterpret, or imitate the canonical Gospel traditions. Scholars organize them by subject, infancy, ministry, passion, and post-resurrection dialogue, and use them primarily to study the development and diversity of early Christianity, not as straightforward biographies of the historical Jesus.
