Sunflowers can misdirect their growth without seeing an illusion; the study shows signal processing, not subjective awareness.
Sunflowers do not need a brain to produce an illusion-like response. Their stem-wide receptors transform light locally, and the resulting signals combine in a way that can send growth toward a direction unlike the brightest source. The finding reveals distributed biological computation, not demonstrated visual awareness: sensing and responding remain different from having an experience.
A sunflower can lean toward the wrong light without a brain. Intelligence may be a way life weighs pressure, not a property brains own.
Two bright lights can cancel inside a sunflower's stem, letting a weaker side win. Its distributed receptors transform and combine those signals, sending growth somewhere the strongest beam is not. That mechanism opens a wider map of intelligence, where cells and tissues can weigh the world without a command center.
