The Story
PURSUE pixels show motion, not a speedometer; one vessel reference reaches Mach 0.4, while the wider dataset stops short.
A fast streak across a sensor is an angular measurement, not a speedometer reading. The released clips preserve enough information to measure apparent motion and, in selected cases, compare an object with a known reference. They do not preserve the full geometry needed to establish physical range or velocity, so extraordinary performance is not demonstrated by the footage alone.
- What is measurableResearchers can measure pixel transit, reconstruct one camera field of view, and use a known vessel to constrain relative motion.
- What remains missingRange, aircraft motion, path geometry, and camera calibration prevent dependable object speed and size estimates.
- The 112 videos lack the range, aircraft velocity, aspect angle, and field-angle information needed to convert pixel motion into physical velocity.
- In DOW-UAP-PR113, the available geometry cannot distinguish a close bird from a large craft traveling at Mach 5 a kilometer away.
- DOW-UAP-PR149 permits an upper bound of Mach 0.4 on the object’s relative velocity using a vessel as a reference.

Deeper Insight
The PURSUE clips show motion, not speed. Redaction turns missing measurements into a playground for certainty.
A streak crosses the HUD strafe clip, but the 112 PURSUE videos hide range, camera angle, and aircraft motion. That leaves one object compatible with either a nearby bird or a Mach 5 craft a kilometer away. The lesson is bigger than UAPs: when the measurement chain is incomplete, appearance fills the gap, and evidence becomes a contest of authority.
- What it could changeUnredacted telemetry could turn spectacular-looking clips into testable evidence about speed and identity.
- How it touches todayEvery viral image asks us to trust what the camera shows, even when the crucial context is missing.
- Our futureThe truth about strange events could keep shrinking to whatever the surviving data allows us to imagine.
- The study shows that even reconstructed camera geometry leaves multiple physical interpretations open, including a bird nearby or a Mach 5 craft a kilometer away.
- The originating discussion emphasizes that apparent movement across a screen is insufficient to establish speed and that better data would be needed.
- The general measurement problem is that angular motion cannot determine physical speed without distance; observer motion and size-distance ambiguity also affect estimates.

Scientist: What 112 UAP Videos Can't Tell Us | Ravi Kopparapu
Video
What can 112 released UAP videos actually tell us? NASA Goddard planetary scientist Ravi Kopparapu joins me to explain what he and Jacob Haqq-Misra could measure in the PURSUE videos, where the evidence runs out, and what better data would make possible. We examine three clips and discuss why an object's apparent movement across a screen isn't enough to establish its speed. A ship in one frame pro
