Panpsychism: could consciousness be the intrinsic stuff of every physical thing, with human minds as high-level patterns of countless tiny experiences?
Panpsychism is treated in contemporary philosophy as a serious but controversial metaphysical option. Its proponents argue that physical explanations appear unable to account fully for subjective experience, while panpsychism places mentality at the foundation of nature and thereby avoids consciousness emerging from wholly nonmental ingredients. Standard presentations also emphasize that the view comes in several forms and faces major unresolved objections.
Dissenting analyses argue that panpsychism may be an attractive response to the limits of current explanation rather than a demonstrated account of consciousness. Critics challenge the inference from incomplete physical explanation to ubiquitous mentality, question whether intrinsic properties have the proposed significance, and emphasize that the combination problem can remain as difficult as the original problem.
