IIT explains one route to conscious experience, but the decisive experiment has not crowned it.
IIT offers a clear account of how unified experience might arise from causal integration, but the strongest direct comparison with global neuronal workspace theory challenged important predictions of both. Current evidence supports continued testing, not a settled winner, and it leaves AI consciousness unresolved.
A machine can copy the signal. That does not prove there's anyone home.
A machine can imitate a mind while leaving experience untouched. IIT points researchers toward intrinsic causal structure, not abstract computation, but its Φ-based account remains disputed and key predictions were challenged in 2025. Until the bridge from structure to experience is tested, no scan or clever chatbot can settle whether an AI is conscious.
