Group rituals bind cooperation to the group, boosting trust and sacrifice for insiders while sharpening exclusion of outsiders.
The strongest evidence indicates that some rituals can causally improve cooperation by synchronizing behavior, increasing physiological arousal, strengthening shared identity, and signaling commitment. Field and laboratory studies report greater cooperation after synchronized or complementary activity, although these effects are specific to particular tasks and settings rather than proof that rituals generally make groups cooperative.

Rituals bind a group by drawing a line around it. The warmth inside comes with a watchful eye on everyone outside.
Drum together, move together, and you trust each other more; the studies are real. The catch shows up in kids. Children who joined a group ritual put on more in-group displays and watched the other group more closely. Synchrony buys solidarity at the price of conformity and groupthink. Every chant that makes us one also decides who isn't us.
