What is collective synchronicity in groups?

The dominant research view treats collective synchronicity as a measurable alignment across group members' actions, physiology, or neural activity. It is understood as a flexible coordination process that can simplify interaction, support joint tasks, strengthen affiliation, and sometimes predict cohesion or performance. Researchers distinguish forms of synchrony by timing, direction, observability, and leader–follower structure rather than treating all alignment as equivalent.
A more emergent account emphasizes that collective rhythm may arise from relatively simple local coordination rules, shared environments, and interaction dynamics rather than from a unified group mind. This view treats group synchrony as context-dependent and cautions that observed alignment does not by itself establish a causal mechanism or guarantee better performance.
