Are large language models secretly having subjective experiences we can't detect with our current tests?
The strongest skeptical case holds that current LLMs simulate conscious language without having experiences. Its arguments appeal to their Transformer-style architecture, lack of biological substrate, embodiment, self-organization, continual learning, or the relevant causal organization. These are theory-dependent arguments rather than an experimentally definitive detection of unconsciousness.
Nobody can define consciousness, so nobody can say an AI lacks it. Machines describing their inner lives make that harder to ignore.
The confident answer is no: transformers, no body, just patterns of text. The philosopher Chalmers weighs the evidence both ways and finds the usual objections don't close the case. Theories of consciousness disagree, and researchers already probe model internals with Integrated Information Theory, a leading account of experience. If something is home, our tests may be too crude to notice.

Vincent Conitzer What, if anything, can we say about whether large language models (LLMs) and related AI systems are conscious? This is a controversial question. It relates to other controversial questions, such as the moral
