Video: A strange infrared signal in James Webb Space Telescope data may come from space, the telescope, or the data.

A signal before a source is a warning that our cosmic map is less complete than its pictures suggest.

A bright line rising from a blank-looking patch of the Ultra Deep Field exposes a limit in our map of the sky: spectroscopy can reveal change before imaging reveals a thing. The incentive is scientific, not sensational, anomalies force better calibration, repeat observations, and sharper rules for separating new phenomena from telescope behavior. The remaining power is simple: keep the raw evidence open to scrutiny.

• The anomalyThe unusual combination, a repeated line with no imaged counterpart, makes the event valuable precisely because familiar categories do not fit cleanly.
• The testIndependent reductions, repeat observations, and instrument checks would determine whether the signal belongs to the sky or to the measurement chain.

• The reported feature appeared twice, 88 days apart, in a region extensively observed by Hubble and JWST.astrometrik +1
• The supplied accounts describe the signal as real-looking but not a message and leave its physical origin unknown.astrometrik +1
• JWST surveys have found other infrared transients without obvious host galaxies, showing that infrared change can precede a straightforward identification.wis-tns
