The Siberian tomb proves psychoactive cannabis use; the exact ritual, method, and meaning remain open.
The strongest reading is narrower than the popular image of a Scythian smoke ceremony. Tunnug 1 establishes psychoactive cannabis exposure through THC in hair and cannabis seeds in the tomb, while the Pamir braziers provide direct evidence for ritual cannabis smoking elsewhere in the region. Herodotus supplies a compatible written account, but the Siberian evidence alone does not prove incense burning or a specific sacramental ceremony there.

Tunnug 1, a royal Siberian burial mound, held 1,400 seeds and THC in human hair. Cannabis opened a route to ritual power.
More than 1,400 cannabis seeds lay in Tunnug 1, a 2,800-year-old royal burial mound in Siberia, while THC, cannabis’s main psychoactive compound, survived in human hair. The find places cannabis inside a steppe tradition of burial, smoke, and altered consciousness, opening a window onto rituals whose meaning disappeared with their keepers.
