The Story
Gabon’s iboga is entering pharmaceutical research, but patents generally target derivatives, uses and processes rather than the plant itself.
Iboga is moving from traditional use into regulated pharmaceutical research. The clearest institutional reading is that companies are developing standardized ibogaine products and patenting novel molecules, formulations or manufacturing methods—not simply claiming ownership of every wild iboga plant. The unresolved issue is whether Gabonese communities will receive fair benefits and whether export and research rules are being followed.
- A patent-register review found two documents naming Tabernanthe iboga on the front page, while broader searches for ibogaine returned 2,802 documents, showing why patent totals require precise definitions.
- Drug developers are filing patents on ibogaine-like molecules, while governments and regulators are expanding research attention.
- Filament Health describes IBEX011 as a naturally derived, Nagoya Protocol-compliant iboga extract using proprietary extraction, purification and stabilization methods; it has not been authorized for clinical trials.

Deeper Insight
When sacred knowledge becomes a drug pipeline, fair payment is only the first test of who truly controls iboga’s future.
The deeper issue is not only who holds a patent, but who gets to define iboga’s value after generations of Bwiti knowledge made the plant legible to global medicine. Gabon’s benefit-sharing push points to a structural gap: a community can consent to an export and still lose control or income when the material becomes a higher-value product elsewhere.
- Gabon’s new benefit-sharing law and export freeze followed a case in which a farming community shipped legal iboga abroad but reportedly received no money after the bark became a downstream product.
- Gabon’s proposed regulatory changes would cover iboga, ibogaine and chemical derivatives, after U.S. policy elevated ibogaine research as a national priority.
- A reported patent landscape identified 1,382 iboga-related filings worldwide, including 380 in the United States and about 20 across Africa, with 256 considered especially threatening to traditional knowledge; the source presents this as an advocacy study.
