In 1959, Lee R. Munsick mailed a strange photograph to Michael G. Mann, a New York UFO researcher. In 1961, Saucer News put it on its cover and opened a public fight over whether Munsick’s Mars trip was literal. The photograph had become part of the contact story before its meaning was settled.
