Zoo Hypothesis
Image: nature.com
The hypothesis is treated as a coherent but highly speculative solution to the Fermi paradox. Its logic is straightforward: advanced civilizations might hide Earth to protect natural development, avoid contamination, or limit risks. However, current observations do not establish either extraterrestrial civilizations or their motives, so the idea remains one possibility among several.
Critical analyses focus on the amount of coordination the hypothesis requires. If civilizations arise at different places and times, finite light speed may prevent any early power from imposing a uniform policy across the Galaxy. Critics also argue that a civilization capable of reaching or monitoring Earth might have little reason to preserve secrecy, making the hypothesis vulnerable to assumptions about alien sociology.
