A Mercury lander could turn orbital clues into direct measurements, tightening the story of the planet without finishing it.
A lander would not magically reveal the entire core, but it could supply the missing ground truth that orbital observations cannot provide. Direct chemical, mineralogical, magnetic, and geophysical measurements would test competing models of Mercury’s volatile-rich surface, massive core, ancient field, and geological evolution. The mission concept is therefore best understood as a major constraint on the mysteries, not a guaranteed final answer.
Mercury’s surface holds the clues to a world built differently, but one landing cannot expose everything beneath the crust.
Mercury’s deepest puzzle is not one missing number but a broken link between surface evidence and planetary origins. Its reduced chemistry, giant core, residual magnetic field, volcanism, contraction, and polar volatiles record different chapters of formation and change. A lander could connect those chapters through local evidence, but a single site and surface mission would still leave the planet’s inaccessible deep interior partly inferred.
