Will capitalism itself be deliberately dismantled as a global system to avert ecological collapse, rather than merely reformed?
This view emphasizes capitalism’s exceptional durability, adaptability, and present global reach. Capitalist economies have survived major crises, while no alternative has yet displaced markets at global scale. From this perspective, capitalism may be heavily regulated or modified, but its worldwide disappearance is difficult to predict and cannot be inferred simply from its recurring problems.
Dissenting analyses argue that capitalism is not permanent and may be transformed by crises, ecological limits, political mobilization, or democratic experimentation. They differ on mechanism: some stress capitalism’s internal contradictions, others argue that climate protection may require abolishing it, while more cautious Marxist analysis rejects inevitability and focuses on building feasible alternatives.
