Roman will widen the early-universe census, showing how the first galaxies grew into the cosmic structures around us.
Roman’s survey is a systematic census of the early universe. Its unusual combination of depth and area should identify more distant galaxies, measure their properties, and show how common different stages of growth were. That wider statistical view can test how stars, galaxies, dark matter, and black holes shaped the transition from Cosmic Dawn to the mature universe.

Roman may show that the first galaxies were not isolated surprises, but evidence of a faster cosmic beginning.
The deeper story is a pressure test on cosmic history. JWST has already found unexpectedly early and structured galaxies, raising questions about how quickly stars, galaxies, and black holes assembled. Roman’s wider field could show whether those objects are rare surprises or signs that the first billion years unfolded faster and more efficiently than current models allow.
