For consumers, SAE Level 4 is most likely to arrive first as a geofenced service: summon a vehicle, ride without supervising, and accept that it may refuse trips beyond its approved area or in difficult conditions. A privately owned Level 4 car is a different and harder proposition. Current consumer systems remain Level 2, while Level 4 robotaxis already demonstrate the ride experience in limited locations—but not universal door-to-door driving.

Lens adapted to this topic: Why the Level 4 promise may stay narrower
A more skeptical engineering reading warns against treating Level 4 as the next rung on a single consumer-technology ladder. Robotaxis and consumer driver assistance use different sensor, safety, qualification, and business models. The result may be a carefully constrained premium service in selected places, while household vehicles remain Level 2 for much longer than marketing suggests.
