Project Magnet: Wilbert B. Smith’s civil program quietly attempted to map a magnetic propulsion signature for flying saucers.
Summary
Project Magnet was a modest, government-sanctioned technical inquiry rather than proof that Canada possessed recovered saucers or confirmed alien technology. Smith and his colleagues gathered reports, considered observational reliability, and attempted to correlate sightings with measurable physical disturbances. The surviving record supports genuine institutional interest and experimentation, but later analysis finds that the program did not confirm the antigravity or magnetic anomalies it hoped to detect.
- What it establishedCanada formally collected and studied UFO reports using technical and administrative resources.
- What it did not establishThe project did not independently verify extraterrestrial craft or a functioning magnetic propulsion system.
- Project Magnet investigated reports and possible physical correlates through data collection, analysis, and instrument measurements.
- Its experimental program concluded without confirming the antigravity effect or magnetic anomalies associated with Smith’s hypothesis.
- The wider Canadian investigation was fragmented, and official projects were eventually terminated after concluding that the phenomenon did not lend itself readily to scientific investigation.

Deeper Insight
Project Magnet gave flying saucers a government file, not a government answer. That gap is where secrecy grows into belief.
Wilbert B. Smith, the radio engineer behind Canada’s small Project Magnet, tested sightings against radio, gravity, radiation and magnetic disturbances. The project confirmed official interest, not antigravity or alien technology. But a classified memo and an unfinished inquiry left a vacuum where evidence ends and suspicion begins.
- What it could changeConfirmed magnetic effects would turn saucer reports from folklore into a new physics problem.
- How it touches todayEvery unexplained sighting still carries the weight of whoever investigated it first.
- Our futureA public fed fragments will fill the gaps with certainty, whether the evidence can bear it.
- Smith believed flying saucers existed and operated on magnetic principles, and he used Project Magnet to investigate that possibility.
- The project’s instruments were intended to correlate sightings with radio, gravitational, radioactive, and magnetic disturbances.
- Smith’s 1950 memorandum described purported high-level American claims about the classification of flying-saucer technology.
