What was NSA surveillance at AT&T Room 641A?

Room 641A turned AT&T’s pipes into a government window. Privacy can vanish inside systems we mistake for neutral.

In San Francisco, fiber splitters fed copied Internet traffic into AT&T’s restricted Room 641A, where high-speed equipment could inspect content and traffic patterns. Mark Klein described access to sweeping communications, while the fight over what was read or retained points to a larger problem: the network carrying private life can also expose it.

• What it could changeNetwork hardware could become evidence of state power, not just a tool for carrying messages.
• How it touches todayEvery private connection depends on infrastructure the public cannot easily inspect.
• Our futurePrivacy could shrink inside ordinary systems while accountability arrives only after the room is exposed.

• AT&T could characterize the Narus equipment as useful for network security, virus detection, or hack protection rather than proof of universal monitoring.internationalskeptics
• Mark Klein’s account was firsthand regarding the room and its infrastructure, but his interpretation of its purpose and reach remained contested.ojs +2
