Video provenance analysis reconstructs a video's lineage: where it came from, which assets or edits contributed to it, and how it changed before reaching the viewer. It combines forensic comparison, metadata or cryptographic records, and sometimes trusted capture systems. The result can support authenticity and attribution, but provenance is not by itself proof that the scene, caption, or interpretation is truthful.

Lens adapted to this topic: Limits, gaps, and trust assumptions
The critical account emphasizes that provenance is evidence about a media object's chain of custody, not a truth machine. Signed records, watermarks, or recovered lineage can be incomplete, compromised, or attached to misleading captions and contexts. Their value therefore depends on trustworthy capture, signing, institutions, and independent checks of what the video actually depicts.
