The US military’s secret unmanned spaceplane practices on-orbit inspections, satellite intervention, and rapid return of technologies.
Summary
The mainstream account treats X-37B as a reusable orbital test platform for developing spacecraft technologies and conducting experiments that can be recovered and examined on Earth. Its autonomous launch, long-duration operation, payload bay, reentry, and runway landing provide a flexible military space-testing capability, while public evidence does not establish it as an operational weapon.
- Core functionReusable spacecraft development, on-orbit experimentation, and recovery of hardware for inspection.
- Strategic valueRepeated missions can mature technologies and support rapid refurbishment, launch, and recovery cycles.
- Evidence boundaryThe platform’s broad role is public, but individual payloads and objectives remain classified.
- The Air Force describes X-37B as an experimental program demonstrating reliable, reusable, unmanned space-test capabilities and returning experiments to Earth.
- The vehicle can deploy small satellites, conduct on-orbit experiments, and autonomously reenter and land on a runway.
- A specialist fact sheet characterizes the vehicle primarily as a test platform for reusable space capabilities rather than an operational space weapon.

Deeper Insight
Wings and landing gear are dead weight in orbit. When a cheaper satellite could do the job, the expensive part is what you bring home.
The X-37B is a Boeing-built robot spaceplane run by the Air Force's Rapid Capabilities Office. It stays up for long stretches, then glides home to a runway. The Union of Concerned Scientists, a science advocacy group, says ordinary spacecraft could do most of its plausible jobs for less. Unless the point is the return trip. What comes back is the part nobody describes.
- What it could changeAn uncrewed craft that can stay up for long stretches and bring its cargo home changes what a military can test, and hide, in orbit.
- How it touches todayAnalysts already read the program as one move in a wider race to militarize space.
- Our futureOrbit could fill with machines whose real jobs we only learn about once they come home, if ever.
- The Union of Concerned Scientists argues that many plausible X-37B functions can be performed more cheaply or efficiently by conventional spacecraft.
- The spaceplane’s wings, landing gear, and heat shielding add substantial mass and make launch and maneuvering more difficult.
- Some analysts connect the program’s secrecy and military context to broader concerns about militarization or future weaponization of space.

### Summary The X-37B is a reusable unmanned spacecraft that is carried into orbit on a large launch vehicle, and is designed to return from space and land like an airplane. While this “space plane” could perform a range of missions, in each case we can identify a better, more efficient, and/or chea
