The Economic Singularity will collapse wage-based economies by making intelligence effectively free and human labour obsolete.
Summary
The mainstream economic approach treats the singularity as a testable hypothesis about whether AI can substitute for conventional inputs and trigger self-reinforcing growth. Nordhaus developed a growth model and reported that his tests did not indicate the singularity was near. Other economic analyses stress diminishing returns, uncertainty, and the difficulty of inferring explosive growth from historical trends.
- Core testThe key issue is how readily information and AI systems substitute for labour and other conventional inputs.
- Evidence thresholdRapid technological progress alone does not establish that growth will accelerate without limit or that human work will disappear.
- Nordhaus defines the hypothesis as sharply accelerating growth driven by computation and AI, then concludes from his tests that the singularity was not near.
- Critiques emphasize diminishing returns and argue that existing arguments for a singularity may not be strong enough to overcome them.
- Historical growth research examines whether past increases in growth rates support continued acceleration, but it does not by itself establish a future singularity.
Deeper Insight
Nordhaus found no singularity near. But if AI makes intelligence cheap, human work stops being the economy's measuring stick.
Nordhaus tested whether AI could drive explosive growth and found no singularity near. The sharper threat is not one sudden boom, but a slow collapse of the old bargain: people trade scarce skills for wages, then machines make those skills abundant. Growth could soar while work loses its price and millions lose their place in the system.
- What it could changeCheap machine intelligence could break the link between earning a living and having a job.
- How it touches todayEvery task AI takes over tests whether wages still reflect human skill.
- Our futureIf work stops setting people’s place in society, abundance could arrive with power concentrated above it.
- One formulation defines the singularity as economic models failing because intelligence supply rises exponentially while the marginal cost of producing it approaches zero.
- Another formulation centers on a future in which most humans cannot work for money, requiring a substantially different economic system.
- The technological-unemployment version defines the singularity as the point when most humans no longer have jobs, with automation and abundance as central themes.
