What is the dinosaur survival after the K–Pg extinction hypothesis?

Some non-avian dinosaurs survived regionally for hundreds of thousands of years after the K–Pg impact.
Summary
The mainstream account treats the K–Pg impact as the decisive cause of non-avian dinosaur extinction. It allows that ecological collapse may have unfolded unevenly and that fossils can appear near or above the boundary, but regards claims of surviving non-avian populations as unconfirmed because the key specimens may be misdated or reworked.
- Core findingThe impact caused a global collapse that eliminated non-avian dinosaur lineages, while birds survived.
- Evidence thresholdA credible survival claim requires securely dated, demonstrably in-place Paleocene fossils rather than isolated remains near a complex boundary.
- Quantitative climate and habitat modeling identifies the Chicxulub impact winter, rather than Deccan volcanism alone, as sufficient to produce the dinosaur extinction pattern.
- Food-web modeling finds dinosaur niches comparatively stable and suggests ecological vulnerability, while smaller vertebrates such as mammals followed more survivable trajectories.
- A 2025 study dates a problematic New Mexico site and revisits late Cretaceous diversity, but its existence reflects an active dating and provinciality debate rather than proof of post-boundary survival.

Deeper Insight
The New Mexico fossils muddy the clean ending. Extinction may be a human habit of drawing borders through a messier world.
Proposed Paleocene fossils in New Mexico place ceratopsians, sauropods and possibly tyrannosaurs after the asteroid impact, with dating and reworking disputes still shaping the debate. Their story points to a larger truth: a patchy fossil record can make a long, uneven disappearance look like one sharp moment.
- What it could changeA post-impact dinosaur population would redraw the timeline of extinction and reshape how we model ecological collapse.
- How it touches todayThe same fossil can tell different stories when its age depends on local layers and disputed dating.
- Our futureWe could mistake a species' last trace for its true end, especially when the record is thin.
- A proposed study reported ceratopsian, sauropod, and possibly tyrannosaur fossils as surviving roughly half a million years after the impact, though the claim was expected to be controversial.
- Geochronologic, palynologic, paleomagnetic, and geochemical evidence was presented to place dinosaur-bearing New Mexico formations in the Paleocene.
- Some researchers have argued that dinosaur extinction was a slower environmental decline and that boundary dating based on limited regions may be misleading.
