Artificial extraterrestrial intelligence could already be the galaxy's dominant, long-lived presence rather than biological aliens.
Summary
The mainstream scientific framing treats artificial extraterrestrial intelligence as a serious possibility for SETI, not an established discovery. It follows a technological trajectory: biological civilizations may create increasingly autonomous machines, which could become the most durable or detectable remnants of alien intelligence. This expands the search toward technosignatures and cosmic engineering, while the absence of confirmed evidence keeps the claim hypothetical.
- Advanced extraterrestrial intelligence may be more likely to appear as artificial systems than as flesh-and-blood beings, especially if technological evolution continues beyond biology.
- Artificial civilizations or probes could be more durable and detectable than their biological creators, reshaping what SETI should look for.
- Some statistical Drake-equation analyses conclude that artificial intelligence could be the prevalent form of intelligence in the universe, but that result depends on limited plausible assumptions.

Deeper Insight
SETI may never meet an alien. It may find the machine that outlasted one.
A Bracewell–von Neumann probe would cross the galaxy without a living crew, built to explore and communicate after its makers were gone. That possibility shifts the search from alien bodies to durable machines, and forces a sharper question: when creators vanish, what keeps their intentions alive?
- What it could changeSETI could search for long-lived probes and cosmic engineering, not just radio messages from living worlds.
- How it touches todayWe already build systems meant to act beyond any one person's lifetime.
- Our futureCivilizations could leave behind machines that carry their reach farther than their bodies ever could.
- Autonomous Bracewell–von Neumann probes are proposed as a plausible way advanced extraterrestrial civilizations might explore and communicate across the galaxy.
- Artificial probes could help explain why technologically capable extraterrestrials have not been encountered as biological visitors.
- Abraham Loeb argues that ʻOumuamua’s reported anomalies warrant considering an artificial origin because proposed natural models have quantitative shortcomings.

What do these mean?
- Journals & institutions. Published in a peer-reviewed journal, or from a university, government body, court or other institution.
- Early research (not yet peer-reviewed). A research paper posted publicly before independent experts have reviewed it (a preprint). Real researchers, but not yet checked.
- News reporting. Journalism: newspapers, magazines and news sites.
- Reference & archives. Encyclopedias and web archives: a place to look something up or a stored copy, not an original source.
