What is techno-feudalism and how do billionaires gain power?

Technofeudalism: cloud capital has made Big Tech digital lords who extract rent and control access.

Summary

The strongest conventional interpretation treats technofeudalism as a provocative metaphor rather than a literal replacement for capitalism. Billionaires gain leverage through ownership of platforms, infrastructure, intellectual property, data, and investment capacity. These assets create network effects, dependency, monopoly or oligopoly power, and opportunities to charge rents or influence public life. Critics emphasize that markets, profits, competition, and capitalist accumulation still structure the system.

• Political powerLarge-scale ownership can increase lobbying capacity and allow private firms to shape public priorities and democratic debate.

• Digital technology has created new forms of capitalism that increasingly operate beyond the effective reach of nation-states and social democracy.journals
