Psychic fraud has roots in nineteenth-century Spiritualism, when mediums claimed to communicate with spirits through séances and related performances. Investigators, skeptics, and later researchers exposed deception in some cases, while proponents argued that fraud by particular performers did not settle the broader question of psychic phenomena. The history therefore combines commercial deception, scientific controversy, and changing research methods—from public séances to controlled parapsychology experiments.

Lens adapted to this topic: Claims of genuine phenomena and disputed methods
This lens stresses that the history is not only a record of fraud. Some scientists and parapsychologists argued that statistical results or observed phenomena supported telepathy, clairvoyance, or related effects, while acknowledging that fraud and poor controls complicated the field. From this perspective, exposures of particular mediums do not logically disprove all psychic claims.
