Market socialism replaces private ownership with public or worker control — will markets still reproduce domination?
Market socialism is best understood as a family of institutional designs rather than one fixed system. Its practical core is collective or public ownership combined with competitive markets, with democratic institutions determining how profits and capital income are distributed. Supporters argue this can preserve market coordination while pursuing greater equality, but historical and theoretical discussions emphasize difficult questions about incentives, political control, and enterprise governance.
Critics from socialist political-economy and institutional perspectives argue that changing ownership may not be enough. Competitive markets can pressure collectively owned firms to prioritize accumulation, discipline labor, and pursue growth in ways that reproduce capitalist social relations. Other critics focus on calculation and governance, arguing that political control of firms can distort resource allocation or fail to replicate capitalist market processes.
