What are near-death experience explanations?

The mainstream scientific approach treats NDEs as experiences arising from altered consciousness during extreme physiological states. Proposed mechanisms include disrupted or recovering brain function, changes in perception and memory, stress-related processes, and similarities to drug-induced or experimentally induced altered states. Contemporary models are increasingly multifactorial, but evidence remains incomplete and no single mechanism accounts for every feature.
Some researchers argue that physiological models may leave important features unexplained, particularly reports of heightened clarity, veridical information, or experiences associated with little or no expected awareness. This perspective keeps open the possibility that consciousness is not wholly produced by ordinary brain activity. Its arguments draw on contested case reports and critiques of current models, not on a settled demonstration of nonphysical consciousness.
