Digital physics proposes that reality is fundamentally computational: physical states may be discrete bits, and the universe’s evolution may follow algorithmic rules, perhaps as a cellular automaton. Some versions treat this as a literal physical model; others use computation as a philosophical framework for understanding nature. The proposals are not established physics. Their main challenge is reproducing continuous symmetries and other successful features of current theories, while some newer approaches extend the idea into broader spaces of possible computations.

Supporters and exploratory theorists propose that computation is not merely a tool for modeling physics but part of reality’s underlying constitution. Variants include deterministic cellular automata, discrete space-time, derivations of quantum behavior from digital rules, and the ruliad: a space containing every possible computation, where observed laws emerge partly from the position and capabilities of observers.
