Abydos’ subsidiary burials, their close timing with royal funerals, and new evidence of fatal cranial trauma make deliberate retainer killing plausible. However, the examined remains represent only a sample, and the evidence does not establish that every buried person was sacrificed or fully reveal the ritual’s intended meaning.

A cautious interpretation emphasizes that the archaeological record does not directly document the deaths or their intended ritual meaning. Earlier excavators found no clear wounds, and the newer results come from a limited set of preserved skulls. Trauma can support deliberate killing, but by itself it does not prove that every subsidiary burial was sacrificial, that deaths followed the king’s death, or that the people were intended specifically as afterlife attendants.
