Did anti–data-center sentiment cost pro-data-center incumbents like Greg Abbott their races?Source

Data centers hurt some incumbents, but the election results do not prove they decided Greg Abbott’s race.
The results show a real backlash, not a clean one-issue verdict. Data centers helped candidates frame rising bills, water pressure, and local control, especially in Texas. But polling placed the issue near the bottom of voters’ priorities, and winners and losers appeared on both sides of the policy divide. Abbott’s defeat is consistent with the backlash, not proven to have been caused by it.
When AI raises the bill and consumes the water, voters turn a tech boom into an incumbent’s liability.
A data-center project turns an invisible AI boom into a visible power bill, a water dispute, or a vanished public site. Developers and donors gained access while communities absorbed the risks, and Abbott’s reversal looked late because approvals continued after his announced pause. The pattern points toward local voters reclaiming control over infrastructure, and shows that backing tech without public consent carries a price.
