Tax havens are a dispersed geopolitical infrastructure that shifts control of global assets into offshore legal and digital zones.
The mainstream analytical account treats tax havens as jurisdictions and legal structures that can distort investment statistics, reduce public revenue, and obscure beneficial ownership. Its strongest evidence comes from FDI research identifying empty corporate shells and from investigations showing offshore connections to infrastructure. It also recognises that some cross-border investment and corporate structures are legitimate, so the policy challenge is separating productive activity from artificial profit-shifting and opacity.
The biggest tax havens aren't sunny islands. They sit inside major allied economies, and now they run data centers too.
Picture a company with no staff, no factory and a fortune on its books. That's phantom investment, money routed through empty shells. The alternative read says offshore is no longer a place but a system: data centers, intellectual property and colonial-era legal zones, run as much from big allied economies as from small islands. Chase the islands and the system just moves.
