Maternal-fetal attachment tracks the mother's cortical connectivity; the fetal brain and later caregiving remain separate questions.
The clearest reading is narrower than the headline: women who reported stronger anticipation and interaction with their fetus also showed greater coordination between regions of their own cortex. Fetal connectivity is a separate biological measure. Existing fetal-fMRI research shows that prenatal stress can relate to fetal network differences, but the attachment study did not demonstrate that maternal feelings caused changes in the fetal brain or forecast postnatal outcomes.

The EEG found a mother’s imagined child in her own brain. Bonding is the first setting of a caregiving life.
In late pregnancy, women who pictured and interacted with their fetuses more showed tighter alpha-band coordination across frontal brain regions. The signal was maternal, not fetal, and it proves association, not destiny. Still, it puts a private relationship on a biological map before the child can answer back.
