Orbit is getting crowded; safer traffic depends on sharing enough data without exposing sensitive missions.
Low-Earth orbit is becoming crowded faster than operators can coordinate it. SpaceX’s public case is straightforward: stale or withheld trajectory data makes automated collision avoidance harder, while operators also face government restrictions and legitimate security concerns. The institutional answer is better standards, trusted data-sharing, and clearer rules, not an assumption that every omission is deliberate concealment.
SpaceX’s ephemeris push could make its data system the safety standard, giving the biggest operator more control over orbit.
A satellite maneuver is a safety warning and a corporate fingerprint. SpaceX says withheld or stale ephemeris makes Starlink, its large broadband satellite constellation, harder to steer around collisions, but precise trajectories also reveal coverage, geometry, and plans. The fix is enforceable data-sharing rules, not blind trust in the biggest operator.
