Do proponents of the simulation hypothesis believe advanced civilizations are purposefully running our conscious lives as experiments or narratives?
The strongest academic treatment separates logical possibility from evidence. The hypothesis can be formulated coherently, and some formal results show that self-simulation is mathematically possible. But computational-resource arguments challenge large-scale physical simulation, while philosophical analyses warn that technological metaphors do not resolve foundational questions about reality.

Every engineer who builds a simulated world with agents in it is running a small rehearsal of the simulation hypothesis.
Video games got lifelike, AI agents moved into virtual worlds, and the simulation idea stopped sounding like a late-night thought. The philosopher Chalmers argues a perfect simulation can't be ruled out, and your everyday beliefs could stay true inside it. Some researchers want to test for a budget: if reality runs on finite compute, wave-particle experiments might catch corners being cut.

On testing the simulation theory Tom Campbell∗, Houman Owhadi†, Joe Sauvageau‡, David Watkinson§ June 8, 2017 Abstract Can the theory that reality is a simulation be tested? We investigate this ques tion based on the assumption that if the system performing the simulation is finite (i.e. has limited
