Evidence strength: The Nature Astronomy study and JAMSTEC release report all five canonical nucleobases in Ryugu samples, with supporting coverage from multiple reputable science outlets. A lone independent Zenodo publication disputes the result, but it is not comparable evidence to the peer-reviewed study and institutional release.

Ryugu contains all five nucleobases, but the ingredients are not the finished genetic machinery.
Ryugu’s returned samples contain all five canonical nucleobases: adenine, guanine, cytosine, thymine and uracil. The peer-reviewed study establishes their presence in asteroid material and supports non-biological production of these compounds. It does not show that Ryugu contained life, complete DNA or RNA, or that asteroids definitively seeded Earth.

Ryugu carries all five genetic bases. The mystery is why space has life's letters, but Earth made them speak.
Five chemical letters used by DNA and RNA turned up in Ryugu, a near-Earth asteroid sampled by the Hayabusa2 mission. Their presence points beyond one asteroid, toward a solar system rich in the raw materials of life. Earth’s strange achievement may be turning those ingredients into biology.
