Can waste-derived carbon nanotubes reliably strengthen alkali-activated concrete at industrial scale?Source

Plastic-and-red-mud nanotubes strengthened a laboratory binder; reliable full-size concrete still needs industrial trials and years of durability testing.
The result is a promising materials study, not an industrial guarantee. The reported gains are substantial, but alkali-activated systems vary widely and nanotubes only work when dispersed at a narrow, chemistry-dependent dosage. Independent scale-up, quality control, cost analysis, structural testing, and long-term exposure data are still needed before dependable construction use.

A plastic bag and red mud, alkaline waste from aluminum making, became nanotube feedstock. The hard part is repeating it at building scale.
Zhejiang University researchers turned discarded plastic and red mud, an alkaline waste from aluminum making, into carbon nanotube composites for lower-carbon binders. Lab tests raised bending strength 54.3% and compressive strength 33.1%, while cutting nanotube-production emissions 65.8%. Waste could feed construction, but only reliable batches make it real.
